Why Sleep Is the Most Underrated Part of Your Fitness Plan
Everyone wants to talk about macros, sets, and reps. Almost nobody wants to talk about sleep. But if you’re training hard, eating right, and still not seeing the results you expect, the missing piece is often sleep and fitness working together, not against each other.
What Poor Sleep Actually Does to Your Body
When you don’t sleep enough, your body produces more cortisol and less growth hormone. That’s the exact opposite of what you want when you’re trying to build muscle or lose fat. Cortisol drives cravings and makes it easier to store fat around your midsection, while growth hormone is what your body uses overnight to repair the muscle you broke down in the gym. Skip the sleep, and you’re training hard but recovering poorly.
Sleep also affects your appetite hormones directly. Ghrelin, which tells you you’re hungry, goes up. Leptin, which tells you you’re full, goes down. That’s why a bad night of sleep so often turns into a day of snacking you didn’t plan on.
Sleep and Fitness: How Much You Actually Need
Most adults need 7 to 9 hours a night, and if you’re training hard, you’re closer to the 9 than the 7. I know that sounds like a lot when life is busy, but the difference it makes in energy, strength, and recovery is significant. If you’re consistently getting 5 or 6 hours and wondering why your progress has stalled, this is worth looking at before you change anything else in your program.
Simple Habits That Make a Real Difference
- Keep a consistent bedtime and wake time, even on weekends.
- Cut caffeine after early afternoon, it stays in your system longer than you think.
- Dim the lights and put the phone down 30 minutes before bed.
- Keep your room cool and dark, both make a bigger difference than people expect.
You don’t need to fix all of these at once. Pick one and stick with it for a couple of weeks before adding another.
Sleep and Fitness Are Part of the Same Plan
I coach my clients on workouts and nutrition, but sleep comes up in almost every conversation, because it affects everything else. If you’re putting in the work at the gym and in the kitchen but still feel stuck, sleep is one of the first things I’ll ask about. Better sleep means better workouts, better recovery, and better decisions the next day.
If you want a plan that actually accounts for your sleep, stress, and lifestyle instead of just your workouts, my Spark! Virtual Wellness Consultation is built exactly for that. Let’s talk about what’s really holding your progress back.
